Well, after some thinking I finally decided to put this English version of blog on the ice for a while. Yes, I know that it has been in sleep for several times already, but now I feel that I want to focus just on one- my Latvian blog:

New Year

Somehow New Year seems more important for me than Christmas but less important than my Birthday. But still I wish that everyone had a white, clear road to walk and a friend who might help if the road is too long or difficult.

No Christmas market for me this year

It was the Christmas market for Latvian community in Stockholm, yesterday which I planned to attend, but for the second time in a month I got cold and didn’t feel well enough for to go there.

Still I made pictures with all those beaded wristwarmers, which I made for sell. All of these are prepared from Latvian charts. Now I am thinking for opening the shop at etsy.com

Later in the evening at last I had time and will to set up sort of drapery between my child’s room and the kitchen.

Christmas Knitting

Now, when there is one special date approaching, I read on almost every blog something about christmas presents decorations, mood, gingerbread and so on. You will not read these things at my blog, couse I don't make christmas presents, definitely don't kill any pig, don't kill christmas tree, and hardly make any other classical decorations (those which I will I am planning to sell at some small market). Maybe I will buy gingerbread dough and bake some. That’s it about the festivity which has a second name:

Let´s adore the consumption, whatever price it takes!

Beaded wrist warmers for Salma

I´ve had been studying together with one more Ph.D.! She wants to make world a better place and is involved in different social issues regarding HIV/AIDS, poverty, human and animal rights etc.

So, to her defence I made wristwarmers with sort of red (AIDS) ribbon and heart in the top as symbol for her passion to these issues. Yarn Lanett from Sandnes Garn, needles 2 mm, ≈250 beads per one.

Latvian treasure

Latvian mitten charts seem to be quite famous, at least among the mitten knitting people. There are several good books to have a clue why is that. One of them Lizbeth Upitis (I will not link to amazon.com due to their strange reaction to Wikileaks). Another is Latvian, given out in 90-ies by Mirdza Slava. I didn’t have it, now I do. I found it via Latvian internet second hand book shop: ibook.lv
Several people had book of interest, I contacted one and a couple days later I picked up this treasure at post-office!

Beaded wrist warmers for Helena

One of my friends just defended her dissertation. Unfortunately I got so ill, that I was not able to participate neither at the defence nor party :(

Still I have a gift for her: beaded wrist-warmers with guitar motive on it. That’s, because apart from being excellent researcher in HIV evolution field she is also playing guitar in the band.

My absolutely worst ever project...

...I call this cardigan. Of course I shouldn’t have thought that this will look on me as good as on the person at drops homepage. But somehow I realized that too late. And now it is just taking space in my wardrobe. As excuse I can use the fact that yarn was on sell before I planned to make the cardigan. Both yarns Highlander and Vienna from Garnstudio drops are difficult to unravel.

Hmm, just came on my mind, my kids will grow up someday; maybe they might want to use it, for carnival at least? :D

Crocheted jersey in blue

Long time ago when we were in Uruguay I found there several old Spanish crocheting magazines Prendas a ganchillo in the bookstore. Those which I bought contained some really nice patterns. This jersey is made of such. Yarn I bought back in Sweden and it is cotton from *Schachenmayr nomotta* Crochet hook 3 and 3.5 cm.

Fabel mittens for me and child

These two pairs I also made a couple of years ago. For both of them I used double stranded Fabel yarn, as experience said to me that with just one my finger will freeze. Now my child has grown out of hers but I am still wearing my pair.

Well, I have been hibernating for this virtual blog world for too long time now. But now back to business!

Recent events first: November 5, Stockholms syfestivalen, autumn 2010. Me and my dear friend Ivana (ravelry link) took approximately 5 hours of our dear time to visit fair boots and shop the yarn. And we had a lot of fun!

Do I really need more yarn? Ask my boyfriend and he will say definitely not. ;) Thought this is the question were our opinions split.

So I came to home carrying 3742 g with yarn for Joakims sweater, ruffle scarves, felting, rainbow, socks and something else...time will decide what.

Pinwheel sweater for me

Unfortunately I need to complain. Namely, quality of the Kauni yarn is not at all sufficient. Already at many knitting forums I read that the yarn might be broken leaving a knot and suddenly revealing a completely different colour. When the effect is supposed to be a smooth transition like this brand is developed for, then the poor knitter wants to have this effect into the piece of fiber art. When I started to knit I detected a knot. Gladly, it was made from exactly the same colour threads and I felt relieved… but soon after I discovered that now instead of being red-orange-yellow-green-etc. my garment will look like red-orange-yellow-orange-red-etc. No good.

Well, as I had bought a little bit more yarn than needed just for my and my child’s sweaters, I managed to plan so that I finally got the right colours at the right places. Oh, I love this jacket very much already! Also this pattern is taken from Elann.

My last needle felt project: dreads

I wanted to try dreads for some time now. Finally my hair seemed long enough and I asked around for some dreadmaster who might be able to make my head. This question left unanswered and then my boyfriend who is the father of my child (yes, we are together again) said that he would give a try to make dreads for me. We checked some dreadheaded people forums, found some answers, some we got from his colleague NuttyDread and then process started! It took almost 3 weeks to finish the forms, but actually, might be good to know that dreads are the stuff that never is finished. And yes, one part of the dread people takes the help of crochet hook. But as all this process is named ´to felt your own hair´ I said, that would be interesting to hasten the process with felting needles. It works! For me at least.

Huge thanks to Joakim for making these wonderful dreads and also to our child for surviving that chronic attention deficit during the dread-making weeks!!!

Crocheted dress

Long, long time ago I was visiting my boyfriends’ now late mother. She had old Swedish knitting and crocheting magazines from 70-ies at home. I fall in love with the pattern of crocheted dress. Then she was so kind to pay for yarn as the present for me. My boyfriend then chose the colours for yarn to order. After a while I had one dress of my own. Here at the picture I am with the daughter of my cousin at her school graduating party!

Shame for me for wearing the dress too seldom.

Skull and snake sweater for hard rock fan

I have a friend. He came into my life when I had it as hardest and darkest. He was standing there with the torch and showing me that light is possible again. As warm and nice is his heart as dark is his music taste, home design and clothes. ;)

Well, and then he was going to have a birthday. Knowing that black is a right colour I went to the yarn shop… but there… following my own taste, I just could not resist not to chose completely black, but next in the colour scale: greyish. Then I also guessed that for a mans sweater I need to have almost more that half kg yarn, but it was not true, I used just 300 g of Kampes wool. What was over I changed later to more colourful yarns. Model I compiled from 5 different patterns. Looking around on Ravelry I found also a suitable sign but that I just made in my favourite colour, orange. And seems that I have been forgiven!

Pinwheel sun hat

Now I have been knitting two pinwheel jackets. One for my kid, one for me (not published yet). When I saw pinwheel sun hat at Ravelry, I had an urge to make it. Because my child really need one and because it looks so nice! After experience with this genius pattern I even didn’t need one for hat. Just was able to make it from the photos of other knitters.

This cotton yarn I bought at curiosity shop, which I passed by on my way to yarn shop :D. Great orange colour, but when the seller told me that yarn is from 60-ies or 70-ies I started to think if it good or bad. Fortunately, I just read the book of Yarn Harlot and she, as well as other passionate knitters say that there is no expiry date for yarn.

Entrelac jacket

Finally I can present my first entrelac project. It has been swarming in my head for long time. Once I tried with another yarn, but got stuck when reading the description. Incredible difficult for me was to understand how could one knit at the front and back loop at the same stitch. I tried and tried, but nope, didn’t get it.
Then I asked for advice in crafters community, got help. But meanwhile I had many other project plans and my entrelac was waiting.
Then when summer was here and my kid didn’t have light cotton-like jacket, I felt ready to give the second chance to entrelac.
Yarn is ecological cotton Eko Tekla 8/4, bought at craft fare for some years ago. Made by Ateljé Huskroken. I used 5 skeins of 50 g. To be honest, the only reason why I didn’t gave up understanding of entrelac was memory that my mother once started to knit me an entrelac pullover, which was finished as vest :D. All the time I thought: if my mother did it, then I should also be able to do. Not that she can’t knit or so, but she doesn’t really like it. Completely different from me. From the other side her sister; my godmother is the crafty one in the family. So part of my crafty genes I got from her, another part from my grandmother from fathers side.

Take a seat on the rainbow!

At the springtime I was again at the craft fair. Among other things I put an eye on the Evillas preyarn in rainbow colours. First I thought that I finally need to learn to spin, but then the seller told me that one could knit preyarn even without spinning. Well, then I napped on idea to do felted things and bought 4 skeins of preyarn.
I have one round chair at my new apartment and decided that this chair need to look more colourful. Honestly, it is not at all easy to handle the preyarn, it takes time do crochet or knit, as yarn easily breaks. I crocheted round piece and made it for 1/3 larger as the chairs diameter is. Then I continued without increasing until the skein was finished. Washing and voila! Here it is: my rainbow chair!

Pinwheel sweater for child

As soon as I saw the Pinwheel sweaters pattern, I knew that someday I was going to make it.
As soon as I saw the Kauni yarn, I knew that I would make the pinwheel sweater out of it.

Yarn I bought at online shop Garnkorgen.se and started to knit this sweater for child. As Kauni is thinner as yarn used for pattern, I literally knitted sweater for adult, which then suites my 3 years old.

And, yes, right now apart from orange I am in love with rainbow colours!!!

Oh, those things sometimes just happen. Always unintentional, unexpected but leaves behind a paralysing feeling. Namely, washing of knitted garment. Yes, sometimes the washers are stupid enough or tired or find other excuses why to put in washing machine fine wool and then to take out a fine felted piece of art. (And yes, I’ve done it as well).
But this time it was different. Fabel is superwash wool and this jacket has been washed at washing machine for several times. This time was crucial though. Apparently another clothing, washed together with this the most beautiful thing ever (or so far ;)), knitted by me, had bad personal chemistry with each other.
I tried already several more washings, bleaching, but so far nothing helps. Maybe you have some god hints?

It’s been long, long blog vacation

Oh, so many things have happened in my life in the last few months. All together I can call this period of life as prolonged tornado season.

A couple of month I felt so bad, that there even were no knitting or crocheting. After a while I recovered and started to work with my hands desperately. And later I thought a lot of updating my blog, but I never did, until now.
Meanwhile I have changed the place of residence and as I came into my new flat I started to make things to have it nicer around. I decided to try not to buy new things but either to do them by myself or to buy in the second hand shops. Well, still I bought the yarn ;)
Here I have crocheted some of the bathroom little things as toilet paper holder, wire candlestick for tea candles, one small wire case for small things and one for toothbrushes.

So six things about me:

1. I recently broke up almost 7 years long relationships with my boyfriend. For this reason and because of some exams in my studies I haven't knitted for almost 3 weeks now. Just feels wrong to knit out unhappy feelings.
2. Once, when I staid at my grandparents place as the kid, sheep came into courtyard and looked through the window. I was so scared, but at the same time didn't want to show it so I asked my grandmother to close the window because of draught.
3. I grew up at small farm, and my parents had a sheep. They cut the wool from the sheep and then we washed it, dried it and went to village to change the wool for some woollen blanket or yarn. Usually it was negotiated kg for kg, but it was possible to pay some extra fee, and get more of ready stuff.
4. Actually my education is microbiologist and right now I am PhD student and am studying HIV virus.
5. I wish to make world round trip someday.
6. I am vegetarian and walking towards being vegan. But then there is an ethical question about wool and yarns. Just one thing I realised by now: all the wools, and other natural materials are really the best when it comes to knitted or crocheted clothing. So, here I have a dilemma.

Parcel for my parents

While I went to school, studied at University and later when just worked, I still went to my parents place almost every weekend. At that time I also knitted a lot socks for them and finger mittens for my mum. They have a small farm, and usually they use more than two pairs each at the winter season. Now, when I live far away, I haven’t done it for some years, instead I started to knit more for myself and more exciting things. Though, the time has come when I knitted some pairs for them again, and just sent the parcel with socks and mitts away.

Romantic crocheted hat

I am practical person. Most of the time. ;) I try to avoid buy things just because they are beautiful. But do you think I manage? No, not really. Sometimes I bought clothing that just stays at the shelf. I bought some yarn just because it is SO NICE. And I even happen from time to time make useless things. Like this hat: I saw the pattern in some old Swedish magazine Sticka & Virka from 70-ies. Beautiful, I thought, will look nice on me! So I made it. But now I have no idea when will I wear it? It is not at all my stile, and I don’t go to carnivals. P.S. Even there is my child at the picture the hat is for me. So far…

Shawl in Fabel

Well it is very interesting with taste for yarns. Like I just love Fabel from Garnstudio, but I rather dislike Opal sock yarn. I liked also this pattern for shawl at Garnstudios home page, so I didn’t hesitate and made one.

Yoke sweater from Drops

While knitting that hat I fell so much in love with those yellow-red bright colours, that new project soon was born in my mind. New sweater with happy colours was exactly what I needed ;) Again passing by one of my favourite yarn shops Stickbutiken (because person working there is very nice, and besides the shop is nearest to my home) I bought yarn for sweater. Pattern first caught my eye at Ravelry where few other people used it for their projects. Knitting yoke is so pleasant that I can’t understand why this one is my first yoke ever? No seems to sew (thing which I really dislike), knitting just round and round, which leads to knitting mostly instead of purling (which then is much faster).

Hat in alpaca from Drops

Hat in alpaca from Drops When I had my ruffle scarf ready I needed some hat to match with it. First I sought around for pattern, found this at Drops web page, which I thought would be very nice with scarf. Then I went to yarn shop to buy yarn in matching colours. Found all those Drops alpaca 3900, 3620, 2915 and 2924. So, I began to knit and took one motif less (caste on 112 stitches instead of 140), cause otherwise it would have been too large for me. It was rather difficult to know where I need to start to make it narrower for the top of the hat. I already made more cm as description said. But when I finished it didn’t suite so well on me. Somewhat too short- you see on the picture. What a fortunate that I have child who can use the hat instead! Me? I am planning to make one similar hat for me again.

Spring green sweater

This is almost 3 years old sweater. I think that idea came into mind when I saw the pattern in knitting magazine Sandra. Either I had the green cotton yarn at home, or I went to buy one. I love this spring, salad green colour! Then I chose the other, effect yarn and decided that now it is time to make something out from two different yarn qualities. I followed the pattern from magazine (except some small details) and here is the result. Cotton yarn: Idena Bambino Bomull, effect yarn: Hjerte garn Flower

Multicolored shawl

This project started already from yarn. I saw it at web bidding page tradera.com and just needed. But when yarn arrived, I realized that it is a little bit different as I suspected. Anyway, I liked the colours and was determined to make shawl. But just two stains with around 29 m in each also didn’t feel very promising. Then I just divided every skein in two (as it was made from two) and got twice as much meters- exactly needed for this shawl.
I also had trouble to find the pattern that would suite the yarn, but finally, by trial and error method I manage.

Milk and cotton

First time about yarn from milk I heard when I went to yarn shop Wincentgarner. They sell yarn from Rowan, and seller told me that there is new yarn out in market, made from milk. How do they do it? I wondered. Next time Maria wrote about yarn in her blog with nice picture of her wrist warmers. As she had knitting café just some days after, I went there and bought that yarn- 30% milk and 70% cotton from Viking of Norway. Actually yarn is called Milk & Honey, hmm does it means that soon there will be yarn from honey also? Pattern I used from knitty.com, Argosy, and it is very adequate to such a changing shades.
But still I wonder, how can one make the yarn out of milk?

First attempt with hairpin crochet

Childs jacket

The jacket is quite old. I made this one while I was expecting baby. As inexperienced at baby’s sizes I happen to make the hood too small. It sort of fitted my child at the first months, but soon was too small. Jacket itself though, fitted more than 2 years. Yarn used: Snuggly Baby Care DK by Sirdar. Very soft and pleasant.

Shawl in Gloria

This shawl is also made from pile, bought at Syfstivalen 2007. Then I bought two colorways of this yarn, Gloria from GB Wolle. One product you have seen here but this is another one. You see, I tried to get rid of yarn stash. Now I have clothing stash!!!!!

Report from Craft Fair (Syfestivalen)

That’s it. Now I have been at this years fair. This time I was better prepared than last year. I planned and wrote on the paper what I need to buy. Then I thought a lot what I like and dislike and all this helped: not so much impulsive purchase this time! Which means also- not so much bags to carry and not afraid to came to home to show all that to boyfriend. ;) At the same time I am a bit disappointed. Cause some yarn from my list just wasn’t there. Example: I am planning to knit the sweater in Fabel 162 (usually one can buy this yarn at most of the yarn shops around here. But at the fair there were just 2 or 3 sellers who had the brand, but other colours (besides quite a few). And so was with many other brands. Very incomplete picture of the yarn market. What I would like is some real yarn fair (as this one is called Syfestival- Sewing festival and quite a lot sellers offered material for quilting people) where many yarn companies would show all their products. I just wonder if such a dream fair will be here, at Stockholm, or should I go for it somewhere else. Apart from the yarn I bought the orange linen cloth for curtain and cotton cloth (rainbow coloured) for the shelf.

Turquoise shawl

This is one more project made from last years fair’s stash. Yarn for this shawl came into kit together with description. So, at some tired-out evening I just wanted to pick up some mindless project and this was good enough for that. In spite of that shawl is not at all so bad. Yarns used here: Chili, Mandarin Classic, Kitten Mohair (hmm, does that means that it contains fur of the cats? ;)) all by Sandnes Garn. Needle size: 10mm

Syfestivalen and red sweater

Well, now I need some sleep, but tomorrow is the `going to craft fair at Stockholm (Syfestivalen)´ day. Last year I came to home with 4 big bags of yarn. Now I tried to plan in advance: things, that I need, things, that I don’t need and things that would be nice to have ;)
Though, I haven’t gone through all my last years purchase yet to validate if I managed to knit out at least half (some kind of promise to myself). And I will not.
Just in case if it shows that I need to stay at home ;))))))

Meanwhile, at last I made a photo with the sweater, which is at least 5 years old. Yarn I bought at the same kind of fair for 5 or 6 years ago. This project was incredible fast to knit- some 22 sts and 15 mm needles.

family project: hats

It started from my orange hat. It showed to be so warm, that we had to fight in our little family who will have it. Finally person who was biking that day used it. But as the second person also liked it (say me) there was nothing else to do as to knit the new hat. In matching colors, so that I can wear my boa scarf with it, but as warm as the orange. When that second hat for us, grown ups were made, I decided that little one also should have one similar. So that all can see, that we are relatives ;)

Orange body for the child

This body I made a while ago for my child for use at the hot summer days. Pattern I took again from old Soviet Latvia magazine. Body fits well together with Joakims knitted trousers as it is the same yarn, but different colors.

Red crocheted shawl

Maybe I should say a word about that red crocheted scarf which you see as the profile picture of my blog. It is crocheted with cotton yarn Härvan 8/4 bought at Åhléns and the pattern is again from old women magazine craft attachment, released in Soviet Latvia. It is so simple to make, but at the same time seems, that many people think that the pattern is some kind of highest hill and I got a lot of compliments for this shawl.
Oh, while I am thinking of this shawl it brings me some nice memories. First of all this project was first which I partly made in public. Quite a lot people wondered how do I manage to do something so complicated. Also there were some who said, that never thought that women in my age do something like this.
Stupid enough I also started to travel by plain with yarn and crochet hook in my hand luggage, but wow for me, whose hook was from metal. I was suspected through security check until I explained that sharp piece of metal is actually innocent craft tool. ;))))

The chess sweater

If you ask me: which of my works I am most proud of? I will answer without thinking: The chess sweater! It is finished for long time ago, but I still haven’t posted it here.
Joakim, my boyfriend already wrote about that in his blog in Swedish now I will tell my story ;)

Once I started to think how to make two so different disciplines (chess and knitting) fuse together and came on idea to make a special chess sweater. So we started to juggle with this Idea and soon visualized it. Joakim had freedom and power to choose colors and design of sweater, I told what is and what is not possible (or good). So a couple of weeks before Swedish Championship of Chess, 2007 we went to store to choose yarn and I started to knit. If I remember correctly sweater was not ready at the first of the playing days, but afterwards Joakim could use it.
None of as is superstitious so chess sweater is just the sweater not an amulet or so. But every time when he wears it at some chess happening I am curious if someone made the remark or asked about sweater.

Sometimes it takes very long time to photo things that I’ve done. This jacket I finished in May but it was never used yet. So, recently I picked up a pile of finished but not photographed things, persuade my boyfriend to go out with photo camera and as soon as we started photo session it started to rain. Typically.

Anyway, this jacket is made from one of the yarns, which I bought at Syfestivalen (fair for some hand crafts) in the last November. Oh, I bought a lot there. In my Latvian blog you can look at the picture of that days balance. And now I strongly decided not to go to this year’s autumn market if I will not knit out at least half of the yarn, which I bought there. But I think that I am almost there ;)

Pattern for the jacket I found at the book Kreativ stickning by Ingelisa. Yarn Simpson: acrylic and merino wool. Needles 7 and 8 mm. Used 5 skeins (one skein 100g).

Jewelry for Indra

As everyone else, I can tell some interesting stories how people meet each other. Here my acquaintance with Indra. Once I searched at Latvian friend web based community if there are many people who carry the same surname as my mother had before marriage. Nop, not many at all (just few). And the only woman also happened to have the same name as my mother. So I wrote to her and she wrote back and we found out that we agree quite well. Next two times I visited Latvia we met and I am so happy now to have her as a friend.

I also made some small simply jewelry for Indra and she was so nice to make photos and send them to me.

Ledas bracelet

Well, now Leda has the bracelet also. I just had the idea of crocheted bracelet in my mind and finally that was ripen enough to make it happen. So I made simple crochet chain with heart-formed beads and then crocheted from both sides in treble crochet. But as with earrings also here the silver wire leaves special impression.

This was very easy. I bought the mix of the beads at Panduro and then just strung them. My child lend a hand, so it went fast, the only thing was to watch out not to string the big ones too close to each other. Before to string the necklace I picked out some beads for earrings.

Again, the book Wire Knits by Heather Kingsley-Heath had the necklace pattern which I wanted to try. I used the metallic wire and mix of the beads. Then I made matching bracelet, but as the necklace is quite impressive, bracelet is more modest.

Hairpin lace skirt

Pattern from Stitch Diva Studios. Just wanted to try. So far had them on once, at my friends’ dissertation party. I made a mistake not to think properly about waistband. I just crocheted that, thought that tight enough but during the evening it got more and more loose and I almost lost the skirt. Now I bought satin band and will fix it.

My child has a cousin. This vest I made for Noah in soft Alpaca yarn, needles nr.3 mm. Pattern I looked from the vest that Noah’s grandmother made for his uncle when he (uncle) was a little baby. But after finishing I started to doubt how appropriate is my chose of yarn for such a garment for so little person (1 to 2 years) as it should be washed very carefully.

Child needs some colors on and to be warm. That’s why I knitted those trousers. Yarn Big Verona from Järbo Garn. Buttons I bought at Syfestivalen. Now I know that straps need to be done differently, as they have tendency to fall off. But then I am crossing them on the backside and it works well.

This poncho is my first half done poncho ever. Half because the second half was done by our friend Mary, living in Uruguay. She is so good at crafts and while visiting their family she said that she want to knit the poncho for our soon to be born baby. Thought she wanted to finish another project and then I asked her to show me how the poncho should be done and as I had nothing else to do, I started to knit. After some days we went to excursion and meanwhile Mary finished the poncho. This is so lovely, it also suites one for very long time. Baby wore it as newborn and as 2 years old.

In one of my recently bought books, Wire Knits by Heather Kingsley-Heath I put an eye on the pattern with hearts necklace and earrings. Before I never had a clue that from simple knitted square one can make such a thing as heart or other forms. So, I tried and! Voila! It works!!!!

When I started to make earrings I thought abut my friend, but when I finished, I decided to keep them for myself.

I together with my child went to Latvia for a week. Partly to work and partly to visit my parents. Meanwhile my friend Jo and cat Tova stayed at home in Stockholm.

One evening we chatted throught internet and I told that I was at yarn shop, but bought nothing ;( (never happened with me before)

Jo answered: oh, thats good, because I opened one drawer of a bureau today – just yarn, opened second drawer - just yarn, opened third - just yarn. Then I thought, isn´t this too much?

Me: Did you look at one bureau or both?

Fabel yarns jacket for child

Looking through different projects at community Ravelry, I saw jacket for child made by this pattern from Garnstudio. It looks very effective with two colors, but I decided that it would look as effective with this Fabel yarn, color 151, which I happened to have at home ;)

Pattern is just genius, cause one needs sew just two lines: those under sleeves. I made size for 2 years old except that sleeves seemed too tight if just 18 cm, so I made 20 cm instead. All the rest knitted as described. Buttons are from coconut shells, matched best with jacket and don’t take over the yarns own color blend.

I am very content with result!

Sunsmile jacket for child

Last year, while at Latvia, I went to yarn store Musturs and bought this yarn called Sonrisa made by Katia. It consists of 55% cotton, 30% acrylic, and 15% nylon, color 9. As soon as I saw the yarn I thought about my child, who really is the largest sunshine in my life!

Now, at the beginning of June, I was knitting and planning a lot of projects but started to think more about my little one and realized that almost all sweaters or cardigans are to little already or yet too big but still all my mind was directed to things to be made for myself. So my conscious pushed at me and I started to make this jacket. It was one of my fastest finished objects. I knitted it in two days and in third sew together as well as attached the buttons. Somehow I had this itching in my fingers and obsession in my mind to make it ready soon. Maybe because I am still having a lot of plans and want to do it all.

But now I am on my second child jacket on row… soon that too will be ready!

Once my boyfriend told me that he would be happy if I started to play chess. I, from the other hand said that I would be happy if he started to knit. Both of us started to make each other happy! I can play a little chess. And he started to knit. First he made a scarf for his grandmother, and then those trousers for our child. They are very nice and look great!

…was very nice day. First we went to Latvian school. My child being half Latvian should keep up the language. There all children got piece of wood (with magnet) to make it as ladybird. This is what we made.After school through the rain we slowly went to knitting café, organized by Maria, Marias Garn (Marias Yarn) owner. It was my first time to participate in such an event. But definitely not last. I liked it a lot to be among many other knitters, most of them more experienced than me. Before I went there I had some questions about techniques or finishing but in there I got answers. One such a question was about my just started socks from Garnstudios home page. I bought yarn Fabel and wanted finally to make some more advanced socks. Those in so called modular or domino or patchwork I thought would be very interesting to make. Partly because yarn makes them so un-proportional and special, partly cause that would be my first project and challenge with modular knitting. I have read some books and magazines about that, but as long as you don’t do it yourself it is rather difficult to understand. Especially if I just read two sources and both of them says controversial things about some of the knitting part. Yes, so I just made first row of socks but then I didn’t know how to continue. Perfect that in this knitting café were some people who could help me with advise for making next row. And what a beutifull things other people do!!!

After being there for a while my child got tired and I decided to leave.

Next stop was vegetarian restaurant Seyhmus. Just delicious food and nice company- friend, who came to drink some tea together with us. After some while even my boyfriend joined for late lunch.
At the evening I continued to knit socks but but ;( …. they showed to be too large for me. I hate to pull out things so I tried to think for another application of my first modular knitting project and decided to make hat for the doll. After all it turned out not so bad!!!

The snowman at May?

Yes, such an incredible thing! This guy was enjoying the spring flowers when we met him. He was not at all sad that the winter has gone (as the real winter this season never came to Stockholm). Just one thing he asked us: pick him up, bring to home and put in the freezer. But on one condition- that we let him out every day, to look at all beautiful flowers!

Cutwork lace embroidery

I grew up with the Soviet school system, with ready programs what should one pupil learn in what order and do it on exactly one way. But finally when I was at higher grade, the new teacher of handicrafts got work at our school. She was very democratic and let us to choose projects, which we were interested by ourselves. I saw this work in attachment of Women magazine (very good monthly attachments on different crafts, I am using them still) and was so ambitious to do it. Somehow I managed. Now, when I look at this work, I hardly believe that I made it. Should I say that it is never practical used? It feels somehow so precious that I am afraid to take it out from shelf and bag. What if it will get dirty?
So I let it be. So far ;)

Socks

For a quite long time all my knitting were to knit socks and gloves for my parents. Not for beauty, but for work. As they have a small farm and almost everything is on manpower there, they wore out 4 till 5 pairs of socks or gloves per season. So, at autumn I started to knit and at spring finished. Then I even hadn’t time for something else, as I also hadn’t explore knitting or crocheting as my passion. Now I sort of stopped to deliver hypes of socks for them, due to many reasons. One is that I live far away, second, that I have been taking more time for myself.

Here is a pair of socks for my mother and a pair for father. Yarn Fabel from Garnstudio and Lanett from Sandnes Garn.
As you can see they are very simple. Just now, when I am looking at other blogers pages or knitting community pages, I see and am amazed how beautiful socks some people makes. Soon me too will try some so called monkey (have no idea why it is called like that) or cabled or…. pattern of socks.

Crocheted shawl

I saw this pattern for shawl from Garnstudio and liked it a lot. Winter 2006/2007 we spent far away from home. I was without near friends and possibilities to go around, so I had nothing else to do as to buy yarn and make one shawl. I chose not to make it in mohair, but wanted to have it thicker. Yarn Rosita Veslon 100% acryl, colors 51, 9, 29. One makes square by square, then works it together. After all I overdid the crocheting (difficult to stop) and shawl was too big. Later on I pulled out two lines of squares and now I am making some kind of coat/jersey for my child out of those.

When our friends were expecting the baby, I wanted to make the present for little one. I decided to crochet the poncho, as we have good experience with poncho for our child. Namely, it suits for longer time as other clothing. Pattern for poncho is very easy, one crochet just around and around, without need to sew pieces together (which I actually hate). Scarves a la boa

At the beginning of every month I try to go to the magazine shop and look for new interesting craft journals. Once I put an eye on magazines Simply Knitting attachment- some kind of plastic thing with which consumer were promised to make utmost beautiful scarves. Should I say, that I bought the magazine? ;)

At the same evening I started to make scarf for me. I used those yarns: Järbo garn Tindra 100% polyester, color 210, Idéna Happy, 100% polyester, color 800 and Järbo garn Big Verona 100% acryl, color 021. This is the clothing which had given me the most compliments…. so far. I like that scarf very much and it is also very warm.

After some time I made one more scarf for Andrea. She was friend and baby sitter for my child at Uruguay for almost 4 month, for two hours, three times per week, while I went to train karate. There I used following yarns: Veslon Malaga 100% polyester, color 298C; Pingouin Sedificada from Paramount Fios 70% acryl and 30 % wool; and Pingouin Família 100% acryl. I hope that Andrea likes the scarf.

So far I’ve made one more scarf. But unfortunately, I didn’t make picture before to give that away as present for my very good friend Daina. Maybe, Dainīt, some day we can do something about it?!

Where do I keep my crochet hooks?

When all knitting needles finally got place, question was where should I keep all the crochet hooks? As I had knitted, had crocheted other cases, I wanted to see if I can do something else. I bought the orange felted sheet and some felted yellow flowers at the Panduro shop and sew together this beautiful masterpiece with some yellow embroidery thread. Flowers are buttons. Material is perfect for hooks; otherwise they would slip out from knitted or crocheted cloth.

My and Lienes paper shawls

I made the shawl for me a while ago. Then I published a picture of that in Latvian internet community draugiem.lv and get some compliments. One friend of mine, Liene, said that she would like to have such a nice shawl. As I had bought quite a lot yarn, mostly with thoughts to make scarves or shawls even for my friends, I used the same yarn type, but different color for Lienes shawl. Yarn Trawl Paper from Ice Yarns, 20% Paper, 30% Micro Fiber, 50% Micro Polyester. My shawl is in yellow-brown-salmon palette, but Lienes: yellow-green-blue-orange. Colors which suits both of us very well. As the yarn contains some paper, I call them paper shawls!

Cross-stitched elephants for wise guy André

Some time ago I put an eye on auction at tradera.com on pattern kit for cross-stitch painting where one elephant was so wise, that all other elephants drag him on carriage. I put the bid and got it. Can’t really remember if I new then for what purpose, but later on when I get know, that my friend André will defend his thesis, I decided to make it for him. The good planning was important. As I learned from previous cross-stitch work, it takes a lot of time. So I planned one elephant for one week plus little time to finish up all other stitches around. Who would actually think that it takes so long? If I am knitting every evening, I can make the sweater in one week, but here just one small elephant….

Anyway, step-by-step, work went further and I finished cross-stitch painting just in time to give it away.

This time even the framing was not so big issue. I bought the standard frame and made all the rest work myself. Maybe it is not completely professional, but I am quite content with how it turned out.

I just hope, that André likes the present.

Knitted needle case

After long years of my childhood, without knitting needles sorted by numbers, using just, say 2 pairs for all works, I finally fall in collecting and buying a pair of every number. But then I also got in heritage quite a lot from my boyfriends late mother. Also, I got some from my boyfriend’s brother’s wife’s grandmother, who now are too old to knit. All that hype of knitting needles should be kept somehow and I decided to make the knitted case. Knitted with leftovers yarn straight peace and made it together. For bottom I used cardboard, for which I crocheted around with other yarn and sew together. Now my needles are in good order in nice case.

Once, when I as usual in the beginning of every month went to magazine store to see if there is something interesting in knitting and crocheting field, I saw magazine Simply Knitting with attachment Noah’s Ark by Alan Dart. There he shares the patterns for the different animals, which strange enough are believed to be on Noah’s Ark when big flood came because of manhood sins. No, Alan Dart didn’t make thousands of animal species, which we see around as. He made just 15. But they are beautiful. And I made an elephant. So far…

Mittens for all the family

When I saw this yarn Fabel from Garnstudio I was fascinated how nicely pattern makes itself without any effort from the knitter. First I bought a skein to knit socks for my mother. Last week, at the library, I borrowed book by Karin Neuschütz *Sy mjuka djur* (Sew soft animals) inspired of Waldorf pedagogic. There are many beautiful patterns from the animal world. As we have at home al least eight teddy bears but none cat, I decided to make one.

Joakims old trousers were used as material. Pattern was easy, it took just one afternoon to sew the cat, to stuff it and to make nose with eyes.

I should say, that I am not at all the sewing person. I like much better to knit or to crochet. But as this kitten was easy and fun to do, I like pretty much how it turned out!

Blanket for the children rocking chair

Socks for mormor

All about my ruffle scarves

In November, last year I went to craft fair *Syfestivalen*. There I bought a pile of different yarns. At one festival booth they had such scarves already knitted. Of course they draw my attention. Best part in that story is that one seller just made the scarf and I saw that processing is very easy. So, of course I bought that yarn, a lot of yarn- to be able to make scarves for me and some friends. That was yarn from OnLine Linie 194 Solo, 50% merino wool, 50% acrylic. Colour 0011 for red-orange-yellow and 0013 for blue-bluer-bluest. Quite soon I finished that yarn, kept one scarf for myself and give away others.I also published photos in other internet based communities. Then I got a lot of interest from friends and questions from some if I could make such a scarf for them. Of course, why not? Just wasn’t able to buy more yarn from that company, cause that shop is quite far away. But in other yarn shop I saw similar yarn from Schoeller + Stahl Aloha Stripes, 100% acrylic. I bought yarn in light red- dark red- black (0007) for my former teacher and colour called cayenne (0003) for the good friend of mine.

Scarf for Tine

I made this scarf in December, 2007 before my friend Tine came to Stockholm and visited us. I wanted to make something special for her. I used yarn GB Wolle Gloria, color 04 (bought at Syfestivalen, Stockholm) and knitted with 15 mm needles. From the beginning I wasn’t so sure about colours, but then when Tine came in to our apartment, she wore the sweater in the same palette and I was delighted.

Some days ago Berroco gave out free pattern, called Bluebird. It was so sweet that I didn’t hesitate and made one. I used Catania yarn from Schachenmayr nomotta, 100% cotton, colours 0201, 0050 and 0208. Needle size 3 mm. But it didn’t turn out exactly as one in the pattern…
I have problems to understand how the parts should be sewed together. Both when I made the elephant and now with the bird.

Davides binary scarf

I saw the pattern many times for sure, and then thought: oh, how nice! But never saw it made by me, cause I don’t know any person so interested in computers or in Matrix. But then…… one day, there was a window popping up from Skype. Word by word the person writing to me seemed very nice. Then he and his friend came to city were we live, we met first at restaurant then some days later at our home.

After talking and chatting I wanted to make for him something with my own hands, as I sometimes do for my friends. Then I saw the scarf’s pattern again and as Davide is the software engineer and besides likes Matrix, I decided: let the scarf be made!

Black yarn I found at home from my boyfriend mothers stash. Green one I bought. Carolina from Marks & Kattens. From the beginning one skein, as I didn’t know how much will I need. But then???? Typically!!! When scarf was till it’s middle yarn finished. Good, then I need just one more. As from the first visit at the yarn shop just one week passed, I went back. But guess what? Yarn wasn’t there. They ordered, I get know. So I came back in two days….no not yet…..two more days….not yet….in two weeks…..no not yet…..some days later my boyfriend went by and asked…still no yarn in colour what I need. I got afraid that it will be as with green mittens and started to call to all the Stockholm’s yarn shops. Finally I found one skein in shop not so far from my working place. Then I could finish binary scarf and send it to my Italian friend, living in Switzerland.

Cross-stitch – wedding gift

Our good friends had a wedding at August, 2007. Shortly before, I bought a kit with flower to cross-stitch my present for them. Soon I realised, that it will take a loooooong time, but ok, I thought, it will take as long time as it is needed. I went to wedding with card which said, that present will came later. So I worked hard on that pattern, but after discussing with one my friend, also stitcher, she said: oh, those flowers, I made one; it took my 4 years to finish. I got afraid and started to look after another pattern. Found one in the internet. As the pattern originally is from Russian dealer, they didn’t use thread which I am acquainted with (like DMC or Anchor). So, colour palette we needed to find out ourselves (there I got help from my boyfriend). Time went, I sew this piece of art and it gets ready. Then we started to look after some frame. Easier said than done. Frame studios here in Sweden seemed too expensive and we waited. Meanwhile I realised that colours didn’t turn out perfect and that maybe some of them would be better to change. So we bought 3 other colour threads and I pulled out those which didn’t mach well. Then by compassion my boyfriend finished this picture. Frame we bought in curiosity shop and gave to frame studious person to make everything ready.

So finally in the weekend we gave it over to friends who get married already for 5 month ago.

Cardigan for the child

Have you heard that children are growing as mushrooms? The time has came when my child didn´t fit any more in most of the sweaters or cardigans. So, I took the needles, found the pattern in old magazine and started to knit something colorful. Orange (2209) and green yarn Familia from Pingouin. As well as Big Verona from Järbo garn colour 021. I knit it quite quickly, but as usual the longest time took to make it together.
